How To Choose Your High School Senior Photographer

Senior year is a time for celebrating, being proud, and having fun! However, it can also be somewhat stressful and requires planning to make sure you take care of everything you need to for a smooth transition for you and your student. There will be many emotions, time constraints, and a lot of events to attend. We want to help make your Senior year a little less stressful by being your guiding light when it comes to a Senior year timeline and having a smooth and stress-free Senior portrait experience.

When you begin to search for a Senior photographer, look for a professional that will meet with you, ask questions and give an end result that you truly want and deserve. It is important that you meet with your Senior photographer ahead of your session to prepare for your portrait experience, see where you will be photographed, and get to know each other so that you will feel comfortable on the day of your session. Professionally trained Senior photographers should provide you with a Senior questionnaire, wardrobe and posing advice, and guide you through tips and tricks to prepare for your session. They should also have a discussion with you about how you will be using the photos and offer products that will best suit your true needs. Since the rise of digital photography, digital files have become popular. Digital files are great, but photographs are not meant to be hidden or put on a flash drive and sit in a drawer after they are posted on social media in low resolution. Be sure to ask what education or experience they have, if they have references and a portfolio you can view, do they have a website you can read at your convenience, do they have a physical studio location, do they have a client welcome guide, do they assist with posing, do they photograph all genders, do they photograph Seniors with disabilities or situations where specialty training may be required,do they have props and if they charge to use them, and if you are choosing a studio session, do they have a backdrop catalog? Also be sure to ask if they use presets or hand edit and professionally retouch each photo individually. These questions will help you learn what each photographer's experience will be like if you choose to book with them.

Remember that the earlier you book, the more time you have to make payment arrangements or set up financing, plan and purchase your wardrobe, find the style you would like for your Senior portraits, and the more time you will have to nail down your hair, makeup and poses. Big news for King Luxe Salon at 112 W. 2nd St. in Liberal, Kansas as they have a new team member that has secured her chair in the salon.

In February 2026 Karen Ortuña signed her booth rental contract and chose her chairs at King Luxe Salon! Karen is a professionally licensed cosmetologist with over nine years experience and specializes in color services.

Karen will also be providing hair services, along with waxing, brow laminations, lash lifts and more!

She is married and has a daughter that is the love of her life. When announced and opening and Karen contacted us, we had heard she was "a cut above" and gladly welcomed her to join our team!

What is your farm toy story?

National Farm Toy show Days is a toy show that features toys catered to the farming and ranching communities. These toys are often sold in local farm and ranch supply stores and are a big part of the life of a farming/ranching family. The National Farm Toy Show Days will be held on Novemer 1st-3rd, 2024 in Dyersville Iowa.

Imagine this......You live in a rural or farm/ranch setting and It is your child's birthday. Your parents come to the party and after the cake and Birthday wishes it is time to open the gifts. Your child opens the gift from your parents and they have gifted your child an heirloom ride on pedal tractor or cast toy, a Breyer or Schleich Horse barn and horses, or their first ERTL farm set to add to your collection that you had as a child, and your parents tell you they saved your toys for you to pass down to your children. Don't Let ANYTHING Rain On Your Parade!

When it comes to weather, southwest Kansas can be a bit tricky. When Juanita arrived for her Senior session we discussed rescheduling due to an incoming storm. We told her we could go ahead and try to get her session finished before the incoming storm, or we could reschedule for another day. She opted to go ahead with her session despite the storm.

Her session began with beautiful sunshine at a countryside location.
For her first outfit she wore a white sundress amongst the prairie grass, cactus and wildflowers, which allowed for a multitude of looks in one location.

Next she chose to be a bit more modern and edgy. Because she wore a red silk slip dress and her school colors are red and black, we decided to go
with a more urban feel and photograph her with textures, grays and
black to complete the school pride vibe.

Adding our fluffy vintage chair created a more youthful and playful vibe,
while staying more minimalistic with a black storefront building provided
a more mature look. It is great when we can include various moods,
expressions and posing styles to complete our client's Senior gallery
and show multiple sides of their personality.

As the storm arrived and it began to rain, we noticed raindrops and
satin do not mix, lol, we were getting soaked so we moved indoors
to a local business and grabbed a quick drink. Then Juanita changed
into her final outfit for the day. With no end of the storm in sight, we
encouraged her to finish her session if possible in the rain, with a
chance of a surprise at the end!

We used the surrounding buildings and colors to our advantage to sneak in a couple more looks. It was getting dark earlier due to cloud coverage and the rain was getting stronger so we knew we had to be quick!

Juanita really wanted photos in a sunflower field. We explained to her that there are not many sunflowers around here, especially this late in the summer, however, we knew just where a perfect "sunflower patch" was that would work perfectly! As we rushed to the country again, we had to beat the storm. Even though it seemed like an inconvenience, WE KNEW it would work out to our advantage and make for some AMAZING and unique photos. As she jumped out to pose quickly we told her to "just play, dance and imagine she was dancing in the rain exactly like she would have as a child."
And....dance she did! We even caught a rainbow!

The moral learned from this Senior Session was.......DON'T EVER LET THE LITTLE INCONVENIENCES IN LIFE "RAIN ON YOUR PARADE." EVERYTHING happens for a reason and it may just result in an even more spectacular outcome than you had hoped for when all is said and done!

Classy in the Country

Can it get more classy than this? Living in the Midwest means your location options for Senior photos can be limited, however, we have a unique perspective that can make any location look amazing! Because we really get to know the individual qualities of our clients and because offer a wide array of props, backgrounds and accessories from our style closet, we are able to create a custom session with photos YOU really want. This young lady decided to take advantage of the country landscape. Miss Mykenzie Kolb, Tyrone Oklahoma high school Senior, showed up during her first of three Senior sessions scheduled throughout her last year of high school!

From picking wildflowers to tossing hats, she laughed and kicked her way through a half of day of adventure. Hats off to you for trusting us with all of our crazy ideas Mykenzie.

Her smile was contagious as she took a stroll down dirt roads and danced in the wind with cardigan wrap. Mykenzie said her day was more than she expected and she can't wait for her next session in October.

We soon realized Mykenzie has a knack for posing naturally. This is going to be a fun year!

Showing multiple expressions was important, as Mykenzie will be creating a luxury album that was included with the collection she chose at the end of the year. We captured everything from Classy and daydreams, to laughter and even a little sassy in this session. The green trees and vibrant skies help to set a moody scene, while the golden prairie grasses and light skies created a softer, more elegant feel to some of her photos. Because the lighting was changing all day due to cloud coverage, and we were able to create various looks in one session, which we love!

When it comes to Mykenzie's first session, we would describe this one as Keeping it Classy in the Country!

Vintage Storyteller Photoshoot

In a world where time goes by to fast, this couple chose to remember the days long past. Kim and Becky are the proud owners of a beautiful classic Dodge collectors model car. This photoshoot was gifted as a last minute surprise by their granddaughter, and ended up becoming an experience of their dreams!

We met the lively couple for their vintage inspired photoshoot at the Coronado Museum and Dorothy's house in Liberal, Kansas and they were extremely excited to create these memories with us!

With their best friends (their fur babies) in hand, they packed their bags, loaded their trusty getaway car and were off for the wild adventure of a lifetime reenacting a scene that actually took place in the local area featuring the famous rebels of the past....none other than Bonnie and Clyde (or Becky and Kim in this case, lol).

We had to stop and think....just what kind of trouble are these two going to get us in to?

After a few giggles and a whole lot of plotting, these two love birds were on their way to leave their mark on the plains of Southwest Kansas.
The adventure awaits....

After a long day of being on the run, with the sun beating down and unfathomable Kansas heat, they needed a break. It was time to find a hideout and stretch their legs. Because they knew they were being trailed and the authorities were on the lookout, they had just a short amount of time to catch up on recent news and make a getaway plan.

Kim in his usual gentlemanly demeanor, helped Becky out of the car, where she had taken a backseat to his driving. He surprised her with a dozen roses that added to her exciting and romantic adventure he had planned.

Well.... what do ya know....Kim's Dad made the local headlines!

Becky heard something.......get in the car Kim, its time to get on the road! They grabbed their guns, put on their hats and off they go!

Being on the run can be exhausting, and these two have had their share of excitement for the day. Once we found a hideout, they finished their session with some fun posed shots and told us what an amazing experience they had! Never did they think they would get to have so much fun with their classic Dodge and have such great memories to share with all of you. These are memories that their family will get to enjoy for centuries!

These photos will have multiple uses for decor for Kim and Becky and their family, and they will also be able to be displayed at car shows. We are honored to have been chosen to be the ones to document this exciting date day with them! Jordan and Taryn Beeson Wedding

Jordan Beeson and Taryn Lobmeyer were united in marriage on July 27, 2024 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Liberal, Kansas. The couple chose a traditional Catholic wedding and were united as one through their Christian faith.

They chose shades of purples, blues and ivory as their colors and used sola wood flowers and real roses in their floral bouquets and arrangements.

As the couple was surrounded by intricate stained glass windows in a beautiful hall, this details added an elegance to this sacred union.

Having a traditional ceremony was important to the couple and they chose to include a pianist, vocalist and speaker in their special day.

Taryn made an appearance as a gorgeous bride as she walked down the aisle with her parents, where she met the love of her life, Jordan. Her parents gave her away and she took the hand of her soon to be husband.

The ceremony was presided by Rev. Augustine Owusu, who blessed their rings, marriage and future together as husband and wife.

They were surrounded by many friends and family to begin their journey together as husband and wife.

Taryn and Jordan's ceremony ended with a prayer, a blessing, and was sealed with a kiss!

Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Andy Bond!

They say rain on your wedding day is good luck.
Imagine your big day has arrived.......

A storm is rolling in and guests are on their way. Your venue is located on a quaint property situated in on the western plains where our ancestors planted their roots. Surrounded by a country atmosphere of a barn-like reception hall, a windmill, a pond and grain bins, you have secured your dream venue for your ultimate country wedding. The wind is blowing with its natural southwest Kansas tendencies and the flat landscape and dramatic cloudy sky provide a gorgeous scenic backdrop for miles to be remembered.

On June 8, 2024, Ashleigh Hall and Andy Bond pledged their love for one another in a traditional ceremony attended by many friends and family. They chose Moonlight Harvest Event Venue in Garden City, Kansas as the place where they would become one.

The couple was blessed with a beautiful day to pledge their love to one another.

They chose Maroon and turquoise for their colors and roses and calla lilies for their florals with accents of greenery and babies breath. Ashleigh's white wedding gown featured a lace floral overlay with a corset back. Their vintage wedding cake with a wooden Willow Tree topper, homemade cupcakes and rustic detail accents gave their cake reception a timeless farmstead feel.

With the ceremony taking place in full sun, in front of a distressed wooden arch and pond, the reflection from the water provided a natural backlight and gorgeous blue sky.

The moment he was waiting for......Andy, you may now kiss your bride!

This couple has a large family and many friends. Bridal party and family photos are always some of the most important photographs taken at a wedding. Andy and Ashleigh will have many photos that will be treasured of their loved ones for generations to come!

After an eventful ceremony and receiving love and well wishes in their marriage from their guests, the couple joined us for some private time for their bridal portraits before the rain started.

Then it was time to party! The couple and parent dances are our favorite part of the reception because they allow us to capture some of the most special memories.

Needless to say, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Bond hod a beautiful start to their marriage. It was a day full of love, laughter and support from their friends and family. And then.........it rained! But hey, rain is a good thing!

Valentine's Day is the day of love. The day where couples spend time together or give each other meaningful gifts is said to be the most romantic day of the year. However, maybe not for everyone....until now! Not everyone has a partner or a Valentine. What about those that have lost their partner or or those that choose to be single and love themselves? Well, Valentine's Day should be special for everyone!

At King Luxe Photography, we realize everyone is different and celebrate that fact! You may be in a "different" situation, choose to walk a different path or may have gone through a journey that has led you to being what some people think is out of the norm. You may be feeling alone today, or you may simply choose to love yourself first with celebration! Regardless of your circumstances, having a spouse, partner, or Valentine does not define your ability to love!

The person you and only you can love best is yourself! Love yourself first! We say this because you first must love yourself before you can give love to or receive love from anyone else. Love can be both a funny and wonderful thing. Whether you are loving yourself or someone else, it is one of the greatest feelings in the world, but sometimes real love can also hurt. After all, if you truly love someone, even yourself, you will have difficult times and disappointments. And that is normal and ok. To give love, to receive love, to be in love........so many ways to feel this emotion and so many ways one can express it! Have you ever explored the languages of love? International Pancake Day

Today is international Pancake Day! Liberal, Kansas celebrates this day with the annual Pancake Day race with Olney England. That's right, they run a foot race with a pancake in a skillet! It is an unusual and fun event to watch. We want to wish Liberal, Kansas race participants good luck today.

There will be breakfast and bagpipes, church services and even a parade! There is even an International Pancake Day museum in Liberal just a couple blocks from our home. You should visit if you happen to be in town. The museum is really neat and has a plethora of Pancake Day history and gifts.
This event (well, this and Dorothy's house......more on that in another post) puts our little town on the map!

How do you like your pancakes? From Blueberry, apple and banana to savory and even super sweet like cotton candy and icing, pancakes are one of the most versatile foods ever! Seriously.....these carb laden goodies are cheap, filling and indulgent. Not only can they be enjoyed at breakfast, but are also just as good for lunch, dinner or even a snack! Pancakes are the a household staple (in the United States anyway).

My favorites are peanut butter and blueberry pancakes. What are yours?

Our photographer, Julie King, began her journey in professional photography at the age of 12 while photographing for competition in 4-H. She then moved on to photojournalism while in High School, during which she truly developed a passion for photography and graphics design. Julie soon realized that portraiture was the genre of photography she preferred, as it allowed her to connect on a deeper level with her subjects. Since, she has joined the Professional Photographers Association of Kansas, Professional Photographers Association of America, studied at several educational institutions and conferences to further her skillset and attended Texas School of Professional Photography. Constantly investing in continuing education, Julie plans to start her journey to receive her accreditation through PPA as a certified professional photographer soon.

In her words...."There is just something ineffable about creating a person's portrait. No two people are exactly alike. When you create a portrait you are part of a once-in-a-lifetime and one-of-a-kind experience. No matter how many times you photograph a person, every session will differ. When I am behind my camera and I push the shutter, a memory is created that that person will never have happen again. Photographs are extremely important to me because once that memory is gone or over, the final image is all you have left. but a memory can be re-lived through a photograph forever."

It is like you are, in that instance, capturing the very essence of your subject's soul. A Look into the History of Senior Portraits

Did you know the Senior Portrait Experience is a longstanding Tradition dating back as far as the 1800's? In the United States, at least, formal high school senior portraits were documented as early as the 1880's, during which time senior portraits were created using a simple black or white backdrop. Similar to modern Senior drape portraits, Senior boys were photographed in tuxedos and senior girls were draped in silk or fur, and wore a traditional pearl necklace.

Although the fashion has evolved over time, having Senior Portraits created has been a very important and necessary part of history as long as photographs have existed. Senior Portraiture is a coming of age tradition that is not only important for parents, but the graduates as well.

Senior Portraits give the parents the opportunity to not only show their child how proud they are of their accomplishments by gifting them with a Senior portrait session, but to document achievements and history as well. A time to capture the miraculous transformation from them being an adolescent to an adult. To a parent, a Senior portrait session means being able to freeze the last moments of their child's youth and innocence, and document their first steps toward adulthood and self-growth. Often times these portraits are some of the most important and treasured possessions a parent can have of their child, because they may be the last professional photographs they have of their child until their wedding, college graduation or ever again. To parents, these portraits are heirlooms and become irreplaceable works of art as their children age.

Remember the pet you had that was your best friend, your favorite book or your favorite hobby? Well, Senior Portraits are exactly how you can re-live those exact moments forever!! (I pulled out my Senior photos not long ago to show my husband and for some reason I had an infatuation with teddy bears, Girbaud jeans, big bangs, doc martins and plaid shirts lol).
